HOW CAN YOU PROTECT & RE-ENERGIZE YOURSELF?
For far too long, I found myself trapped in an endless cycle of frustration, exhaustion, and self-criticism. If you’d asked me, I would have been the first to say, “I’m exhausted,” or “I never have enough time to get anything done on my to-do list.”
“My back hurts.”
“My head hurts.”
“My anxiety is through the roof.”
“I am constantly snapping at the people I am supposed to be loving.”
“I am over-adulting.”
How did I get here? How did a child who was once full of wonder and joy at the smallest of things end up in my forties, in a perpetual state of dissatisfaction with life? Was this what I was excited to grow up and be? What happened to me, and who let this decrepit, negative person take over my mind and body?
One night, desiring a moment's peace from the constant chatter in my head, I went out to my porch, eyes full of tears and a glass of whiskey in hand. As I gazed up at the full moon, a flash of nostalgia washed over me. I remembered how, as a child, the moon filled me with a sense of awe and wonder.
For a brief moment, a thought appeared like a neon sign: Could I heal my adult self through the very thing that once brought me joy—the moon?
And, because I am a sucker for connections and details, I began to dive into research about our ancestors and the lunar cycles.
The short answer is yes, there is.
If you're in a similar place that I was, let's keep talking. There is a natural, rhythmic cycle for everything on this earth. For thousands of years, humans followed it—until industrialization. With the advent of modern working hours, we stopped aligning our lives with the sun and moon phases. But our bodies have not caught up. And I don’t think they ever will.
I see the impact of this misalignment in the way we experience somatic symptoms—overworked, stressed bodies filled with anxiety, anger, aches, pains, and sleeplessness. But what I’ve learned is that these symptoms are not the cause of our discontent. They are merely the result of deeper layers of unaddressed tension, exhaustion, and disconnection. To get to the root of our discomfort, we must be willing to peel back the layers—one by one.
For me, embracing the lunar cycle was one of those layers.
I started to reawaken ancient practices that our bodies are designed to follow. In this process, I discovered a surprising truth: modern humans tend to evaluate their lives on a solar calendar—by the sun’s rising and setting. And yet, I found myself frustrated by the linear, year-long cycle. The months seemed to slip away, and my resolutions barely lasted past January.
What would happen, I wondered, if I aligned my life with the more fluid lunar rhythms of production, rest, and review—the cycles our ancestors once lived by?
So, I turned to the moon. And slowly, my entire world began to shift.
I began to track the moon phases, one by one and paired each phase with rituals to help me reconnect with my true self. As I started to follow these cycles, something extraordinary happened: I didn’t just feel better physically—I felt spiritually aligned, emotionally at ease, and mentally clear. I stopped judging myself for not “keeping up” with the constant pressure of linear time. Instead, I started embracing my own unique rhythm.
Closing Thoughts
As you embark on your own journey of self-discovery, know that it’s okay to slow down and follow your own natural rhythms. The moon is a reminder that transformation is a cyclical process—a dance of expansion, contraction, and rest. By aligning with the lunar phases, we honor the rhythms that our ancestors once followed and can bring healing into our lives once again.
If you're ready to begin this transformational journey, I invite you to start with the New Moon. Take the time to reflect on what no longer serves you and welcome new possibilities. Remember, healing doesn’t require perfection—it requires presence, compassion, and patience with yourself. You are not alone in this. We are all part of this grand, rhythmic dance. Let’s walk through it together.
